Yahoo!’s Annual Year in Review Spotlights 2011

Before the year ends, list of top newsmakers and most sought topics online are now on the list for Yahoo! Philippines. This time let's check out who among these celebrities and personalities like our very own Shamcey Supsup made into the list. MANILA, DECEMBER 6, 2011 – Today, Yahoo! Philippines announced its annual edition of Year in Review (yearinreview.yahoo.com), the highly-anticipated look-back that identifies the top stories and trends of the year based on millions of monthly unique visitor activity on its network and consumer searches.

The top searches for Yahoo! Philippines in 2011 were mostly showbiz newsmakers including Shamcey Supsup, Sam Pinto, Shalani Soledad, Andi Eigenmann, AJ Perez and Marian Rivera who made headlines for their make-ups, break-ups, national and international notoriety and fame. Shamcey, who clinched fourth place at the 60th Miss Universe pageant held in Brazil, led the 2011 search queries, bypassing her showbiz contemporaries while the Azkals, (Philippine national men's football team), natural calamities such as earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons trailed behind.


Philippines’ Pambasang Kamao, Manny Pacquiao was the third most-searched sportsperson globally after Danica Patrick and Tiger Woods and the second most searched in the Philippines following closely behind Petron Blaze Boosters – the nation’s professional basketball team. Some of the other sportspersons who made it to the Philippines’ list include Simon Atkins, James Yap and Phil Younghusband.

Former President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who faces five plunder cases was in the most-searched news and issues but what topped this category were the Typhoons Powerball that brought extensive damage to the country. Zubiri’s resignation, the first in years also made it to the Top 10 while Spratly Islands that saw tensions intensifying in the West Philippines Sea and the Reproductive Health Bill also made it to the list for being hotly contested issues.


The world news searches on Yahoo! Philippines were dominated by the Japan tsunami, royal weddings in the UK and Bhutan and Osama Bin Ladin – incidentally, the three topics were also in the Top 10 global searches. On a lighter side, Pilipinas Got Talent, American Idol and Temptation Island were among the most popular movies and television shows’ list.



The annual look-back of aggregated visitor activity is a gauge for worldwide interests. The 2011 yearinreview.yahoo.com is available in 17 versions including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom and the United States.
