Athletes and singers lead trending search topics on Yahoo! PH

NBA player Jeremy Lin, the late pop diva Whitney Houston, Filipino Disney Legend Lea Salonga, Queen of Pop Madonna, and football superstar David Beckham are among the top trending searches on Yahoo! Philippines from February 6 to 12, 2012.

Jeremy Lin. Linsanity has hit Filipino netizens as Taiwanese-American Jeremy Lin, currently the hottest athlete in the United States, tops this week's list of trending search topics on Yahoo! Philippines. Last week, the 23 year-old New York Knicks point guard scored 38 points and led the Knicks to a 92-85 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Last December the Golden State Warriors, Lin's hometown team, waived the 6'3 Harvard graduate. Houston Rockets claimed him, only to let him go again before the Knicks took him.

Whitney Houston. Filipinos woke up on Sunday to the news that American pop music icon Whitney Houston has died unexpectedly. Houston, 48, was found dead at a hotel where she was supposed attend a pre-Grammy party. A big star in 80s and 90s, Houston experienced a turbulent marriage with Bobby Brown and battled with drug addiction in the recent years. She popularized the hit song “The Greatest Love of All,” which was a favorite among Filipino singers who started off as singing competition contestants.

Lea Salonga. Filipina international singer and Disney Legend Lea Salonga trended on Yahoo! Search after she reacted to calls by local singers to prioritize Filipino performers over foreign artists. Salonga will be a guest in James Ingram's January 17 concert. She said she does not base her choice on whether the performer is a Filipino or a foreigner but on whether she feels she would enjoy the show.

Aljur Abrenica. Kapuso heartthrob Aljur Abrenica denied that he is dating Pretty Young Thing member and Coke Ride To Fame winner Ava Jugueta. He said they are just friends and even apologized to her for being rumored to be his new girlfriend. Showbiz reports say he has broken up with Kylie Padilla, but neither admits they have been a couple. Abrenica will appear opposite Rhian Ramos in GMA-7's new movie “My Kontrabida Girl.”

Alodia Gosiengfiao. The Philippines' cosplay queen is back on Yahoo! Search's trending list after she met with Super Junior member Hee Chul in South Korea while shooting her first big screen appearance. She uploaded a video of her talking on the phone with Hee Chul, but it accidentally showed his number. She immediately fixed the oversight and apologized to the K-Pop star and his fans. Gosiengfiao plays a Korean girl in “Kimmy Dora and The Temple of Kiyeme," the sequel of a comedy film starring Eugene Domingo.

Madonna. The Queen of Pop performed at Superbowl's half-time show on February 5 with hip-hop artists Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. Madonna said she was overwhelmed by the love and support that she felt from the crowd. She was however disappointed when M.I.A. extended her middle finger during their performance. The British hip-hop artist apologized to Madonna after the incident.

Bourne Legacy. The trailer of “The Bourne Legacy,” parts of which are currently being filmed in the Philippines, was released last week. The video teaser introduces the character played by Jeremy Renner as the new protagonist in the movie. Jason Bourne, played by Matt Damon in the first three movies of the series, will not appear in “The Bourne Legacy.”

David Beckham. British football superstar David Beckham launched earlier this month his own body-wear line for the European clothing brand H&M. His underwear ad was also shown during the Super Bowl. While he said he said that he loves wearing underwear, he has also decided that his “naked days are over” to save his children from future embarrassment.

Survivor Philippines. GMA-7's “Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Doubles Edition” aired its finale on February 10, with comedian Albert “Betong” Sumaya emerging as the season's sole celebrity survivor. Sumayang is his family's breadwinner, so the three-million peso prize he took home is a big help for him.

Nancy Castiglione. Netizens searched for Filipina-Italian singer and actress Nancy Castiglione, also known as Nancy Jane, after celebrity cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo tweeted that she was giving Castiglione the blessings to openly date Hayden Kho, Belo's boyfriend. Kho explained on Twitter that Belo's outburst was due to a misunderstanding. For her part, Castiglione, who is now married and has two kids, said she does not understand what was happening and refused to comment further.
