1 Shamcey Supsup: Filipino netizens are still celebrating Shamcey Supsup’s victory as 3rd runner up in Miss Universe 2011, and they are eager to know her more. In one of her interviews after the pageant, Shamcey admitted that she already has a boyfriend. Her man was later identified as Lloyd Lee – a part-time commercial model, De La Salle University alumnus, and scion of a family that owns one of the biggest knitting and textile companies in the Philippines. Shamcey returned to Manila last Sunday and made a courtesy call to President Aquino that night. The next day, her motorcade started at the Araneta Center and stopped at the Quezon City Hall. She also visited her alma mater, the University of the Philippines, before proceeding to Makati City, where a ticker tape parade was held in her honor. Go Shamcey!
2 Floyd Mayweather, Jr: Now-World Boxing Council welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated fellow American Victor Ortiz with knockout punches while Ortiz was trying to apologize for a head butt that Mayweather received from him. The referee ruled that the controversial punches were legal, but boxing fans criticized Mayweather for doing it. During the post-fight interview, Mayweather said he does not need to fight the world’s boxing champ, referring to Manny Pacquiao. This made Pacman’s fans even more excited to see a faceoff between the two.
3 Julie Anne San Jose: Kapuso tween star Julie Ann San Jose, who appeared in GMA Film’s “Tween Academy: Class of 2012,” will be seen next in the upcoming series “Daldakina,” which stars child actress Jillian Ward. Julie Ann also performs regularly in “Party Pilipinas” with Elmo Magalona.
4 Miss World Philippines: Close on the heels of Shamcey Supsup’s victory at the recent Miss Universe 2011, Cory Quirino’s CQGlobal Quest Inc. crowned the country’s first Miss World Philippines: Gwendolyn Ruais. The Filipino-French winner will represent the country at the Miss World beauty pageant to be held in London on November 6.
5 FIBA Asia 2011: Smart Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippine national men’s basketball team, has just secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 26th FIBA-Asia Championship For Men at the Wuhan gymnasium in China. Smart Gilas defeated Japan, 83-76, on Tuesday after winning against Jordan, 72-64, on Monday. The team’s final game in the second round will be against Syria on Wednesday. FIBA earlier authorized players Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz to play for Smart Gilas “without being subjected to the restriction provided for in article 3-21," which requires the players to submit documents proving they acquired their Filipino citizenship before they turned 16.
6 Lolong: Agusan’s giant crocodile, Lolong, is reportedly expecting a visit from the Guinness World Records. He is a contender for the world record for the largest captive saltwater crocodile. His own ecopark opened to the public this weekend. The entrance fee charged from those who want to see Lolong is 20 pesos. The local government is hoping to catch another crocodile – said to be bigger than Lolong next month.
7 Typhoon: Tropical Depression Onyok threatened the country last week, but it changed its course and moved out of the Philippine area of responsibility. It later intensified as it reentered the Philippine territory and eventually headed for Japan without leaving any damage.
8 UAAP Cheerdance Competition: The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons may not have been lucky in men’s basketball this season, but the UP Pep Squad made up for their loss. After dyeing their hair blonde and performing their Madonna-inspired routine last Saturday, the UP Pep Squad won their second consecutive UAAP Cheerdance championship. The DLSU Animo Squad placed second, while the FEU Cheering squad was third.
9 Breaking Dawn: The full trailer for the vampire movie “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1” has been released. It shows scenes from Edward and Bella’s wedding and honeymoon, as well as her pregnancy. US-based Twihards – or avid fans of the series – will finally get to see the movie in November.
10 Ang Babae sa Septic Tank: Marlon Rivera's “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank” will be the Philippines' bet for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Oscar Awards. The indie comedy movie features Eugene Domingo, Cai Cortez, Kean Cipriano, and JM de Guzman. It chronicles a day in the life of three independent filmmakers who plan to create a movie which they believe will win an Oscar. Written by Chris Martinez, the movie received a number of awards in Cinemalaya.
